Janis Costello Ingham received her B.S. in Speech Pathology and Audiology from Northwestern University and her master's and doctoral degrees in the same discipline from the University of Kansas. Since that time she has served on the faculty of the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She holds the Credential of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology and is a Fellow of ASHA. Her research and teaching have focused on stuttering and phonologic disorders, particularly with children. Recently she has written on issues of research ethics and the responsible conduct of research, and she is a participant on a NIH grant to ASHA on this topic. She has served as the editor of the Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders and is currently Associate Editor for Stuttering for the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research. From 1999-2000 she was ASHA's Vice President for Research and Technology and was instrumental in the conduct of several initiatives aimed at improving the research competence and opportunities for young scientists. She has also been active as a planner and participant in several ASHA workshops on grant writing, publications, and research ethics. She is currently Vice President for Research and Academic Planning for the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders and serves a leadership role in regard to developing solutions to the shortage of Ph.D. students and faculty in the discipline. At UCSB she serves as Chair of the systemwide University of California Committee on Research Policy.
